“It is with my deepest sadness and a broken heart that I share with you the passing of one of your Brothers in Arms. My father, Major Wilbert (Bill) Schwinn, U.S. Army (RET) passed away on this past Monday, March 15, 2021. He had enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1962 and was in Georgia during the Cuban missile crisis, preparing to board a troop ship. In 1963, he was stationed in Schweinfurt, Germany when his unit went on full alert with the assassination of President Kennedy. In 1965, he graduated OCS and went to Vietnam from (I believe) April 1966 - March 1967. He was a platoon leader for 4 M113s and pinned on 1LT while he was there. My dad and my mom had lost a child (my sister, only lived for an hour and nine minutes after birth) in January of ‘66 before he went over. With all the stress of that, he separated from service after he returned to the States. About 10 years later, greatly missing the army, my father joined the California National Guard part time and later full time and then AGR, including a tour on active duty to Europe (Wiesbaden 1/70 HHC M60A3s, 4th Brigade) from 1981 to 1984. He retired in 1993 as a Major. He loved the army and enjoyed attending one of your reunions in past years. I am working with Arlington National Cemetery to have his remains buried there with full military honors in9-11 months (they have a backlog of requests). He is survived by his wife Margie, his two sons, and five grandchildren. Anyways, I wanted to share this with you. He shared with me many photos and memorabilia of his time in Vietnam and inspired me to serve in the military as well.
