Vietnam, 1971
JANUARY

On January 06, 1971, Company B located a small ammunition cache 14 kilometers north of Xuan Loc.

On January 11, 1971, at 1735 hours, Company B located a small food cache five kilometers north of Hung Loc at YT 328145. That evening at their night defensive perimeter, located two kilometers north of Hung Loc the company engaged an unknown size enemy force. The enemy fire was suppressed with organic weapons. One Bobcat was killed in the encounter.

Even at this late date the numbers game was still of importance to someone. One cooking pot was listed amongst the items that were “captured.”

On January 30, 1971, at 0923 hours, members of a patrol from Company C detonated a booby trapped hand grenade 3 kilometers northwest of Long Thanh. Eight Bobcats were wounded in the incident.

On January 31, 1971, the 2nd Brigade transferred all of its area of operations within Phuoc Tuy Province to the 1st Australian Task Force. Also a large portion of the operating area east of Xuan Loc was transferred to the 1st Cavelry Division (AM).

Also effective this date, replacements were no longer received by the 2nd Brigade.

During January 1971, one Bobcat died in Viet Nam. He was:

FEBRUARY

On February 01, 1971, a Bobcat from Headquarters Company died from what was termed non-hostile, accidental, self-destruction.

On February 05, 1971, at 1110 hours, in the vicinity of the old fire support base Henderson, elements of the 1/5th(M) located and evacuated a medium sized ammunition cache.

On February 06, 1971, one Bobcat from Company A was killed. He was riding high in the cupola of an APC when a105mm artillery round exploded in front of the APC. A fragment from the exploding shell penetrated his chest, killing him instantly.

On February 14, 1971, Company A located a small weapons cache 13 kilometers east of Black Horse at YS 565946.

On February 15, 1971, all 2nd Brigade requisitions, except 02 and Redball were cancelled.

On February 25, 1971, one Bobcat from Headquarters Company died from what was termed non-hostile, accidental, self-destruction.

During February 1971, three Bobcats died in Viet Nam. They were:

MARCH

On March 01, 1971, the 38th Scout Dog Platoon, the 66th Combat tracker Detachment, the 9th Chemical Detachment and the Warrior Training Academy commenced stand-down.

Fire Support Base Barbara shut down.

On March 02, 1971, a Bobcat from Company A was killed when a booby trap was detonated.

On March 03, 1971, the 2nd Brigade further consolidated its area of operation by transferring the Nhon Trach area to Bien Hoa Province.

Fire Support Base Rivers shut down on this date also.

On March 05, 1971, Company F, 75th Infantry (RGR) commenced stand down.

On March 06, 1971, the 2nd Brigade forward command post returned to Camp Frenzell-Jones.

On March 09, 1971, Ogle Compound was transferred to the 18th ARVN Infantry Division.

On March 10, 1971, Fire Support Base Asper shut down operations.

On March 12, 1971, the 2/12th Infantry disengaged from active operations.

The Husky Compound was turned over to the 52nd Regiment, 18th ARVN Infantry Division.

Fire Support Base Heidi shut down operations.

On March 13, 1971, the 2nd Brigade was no longer responsible for reinforcement of Xuan Loc and Black Horse Base Camp.

The 2/12th Infantry and Battery C, 1/8th Artillery commenced stand down.

On March 15, 1971, a Bobcat from Company A died in hospital from fragmentation wounds he had received on an earlier date.

On March 20, 1971, the 584th Military Intelligence Detachment started stand-down.

On March 22, 1971, Fire Support Base Leopard was turned over to the 3rd Battalion, 1st Brigade, Royal Thai Army Volunteer Force.

On March 23, 1971, the 1/27th Infantry was disengaged from active operations and with Battery D, 1/8th Artillery, commenced stand-down.

Fire Support Base Schwartz was turned over to Long Khanh Province.

On March 25, 1971, the 54th Engineer Company began stand-down.

On March 26, 1971, FSB Marisa and FSB Joan shut down operations.

On March 27, 1971, the 1st Battalion (M) 5th Infantry disengaged from combat operations and commenced stand-down.

On March 28, 1971, the 1/5th(M) held a battalion awards ceremony.

During March 1971, two Bobcats died in Viet Nam. They were:

APRIL

On April 05, 1971, at 1800 hours, at Camp Frenzell-Jones, the 1st Battalion (M), 5th Infantry ceased its operational mission requirement in Viet Nam.

On April 12, 1971, the 2nd Brigade farewell ceremony was held.

On April 30, 1971, the 2nd Brigade Color Guard departed Tan Son Nhut for Hawaii.

“Morale remained quite high throughout the stand down period. The major contributing factors were frequent shows, cook outs, sports activities and an increased number of movies. In addition, early shipment of excess personnel eliminated a large number of people who would have otherwise had nothing to do.

The augmentation of the PX with additional items was a great benefit to all personnel. It provided the opportunity for personnel to purchase high quality items that had previously not been available.

The 2nd Brigade operated a Vung Tau Special R&R Center, which was excellent and achieved every goal it was created to accomplish.

Increased funding for bands and shows was a definite asset.”

During April 1971, no Bobcats died in Viet Nam. *
