He served as a first sergeant in the United States Army in Company C, 5th U.S. Infantry. He was awarded the CMOH for action on October 21 1876 at Cedar Creek, etc., Montana. His citation reads "Gallantry in action." He died of pulmonary consumption (aka tuberculosis) on March 17, 1877 at the Tongue River cantonment.
