Prince George, VA. – The Prince George Regional Heritage Center’s Memorial Day Exhibit will feature never-before-seen artifacts from Lt. Pierre Bontecou’s Army trunk. Lt. Pierre Bontecou was a First Lieutenant in Company “B” of the Fifth Infantry, 71st Infantry Division during World War II. The Prince George Regional Heritage Center will be open Saturday, May 29th – Monday, May 31st from 10a.m. to 4p.m. for Memorial Day. The Regional Heritage Center graciously received the contents of Lt. Pierre Bontecou’s Army Trunk from a resident of West Hartford, Connecticut, who found the trunk in the basement of her new home. The trunk contains service commendations, like the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart, letters, pictures, scrapbooks and mementoes from military career and World War II. Lt. Bontecou and his widow built the West Hartford home before his deployment to Germany. Lt. Bontecou was killed at twenty-four years old, leading a riffle platoon on a mission in Bad Soden, Germany. Thirty days after his death, Germany surrendered and the war in Europe was over. Lt. Bontecou was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star in addition to many other service awards. Lt. Bontecou was one of 77 men from Hopewell and Prince George who died in service during World War II. Lt. Bontecou’s exhibit at the Prince George Regional Heritage Center will be on display from May 29th – June 30th. The Regional Heritage Center is open Thursday – Saturday from 10a.m. to 4p.m. by appointment only.
