Milton Harper Jr. (Brown Man) son of the late Milton and Lillie R. Harper was born on February 3rd, 1950 in Durham, N. C. He slipped into a peaceful rest on July 16 2017 at the Durham Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
He has preceded in death by sisters, Audrey Harper and Thelma Burgett. Milton joined Saint Teresa Catholic Church at an early age before transferring to Immaculate Catholic Church then Holy Cross Catholic Church. He had been an Alter Server, and a member Knights of Columbus and the Holy Cross Men’s Society. They were known for their famous Ribs. He also helped build homes with Habitat for Humanity.
Milton received his education in Durham Public Schools. He graduated from Hillside High School Class of 1967, where he also played baseball for the Hillside Hornets. Milton graduated from A&T University with a B.S. Degree in Electrical Engineering as a proud Aggie. He attended Graduate School at NCCU, N.C. State University, University of Tennessee and University of Florida. He proudly served in the US Army during the Vietnam area from August 12, 1969 to June 4, 1971. He was a decorated soldier earning National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal W/2 Bronze Stars, 2 OS Bars, Vietnam Campaign Medal W/1960 Device, Marksman (M-14),Sharpshooter (M-16),Combat Infantryman Badge (1st Award), Bronze Star Medal (1st Oak Leaf Cluster). Milton was employed at Johnson Space Center outside Houston Texas, General Electrics in Goldsboro, N.C. and Duke Power Nuclear Plant outside Charlotte, N.C. He was an educator within the Durham public school system, teaching at Hillside High School, Teacher/Counselor for Willie M children and Special Needs students. He was also a Teledyne Quality Engineer and Quality Engineer Supervisor at SCI incorporated in Graham, N.C.
He was a member of OMEGA-PSI-PHI fraternity Incorporated, IEEE, Past Worthy Patron OES and member of AS Hunter Masonic Lodge and a lifetime member of The Boys Traveling Club.
Milton was a loving and devoted father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He loved to pamper and spoil his children, grandchildren, family and friends. He will truly be missed.
He leaves to cherish his memory, two sons, Damien Dixon and Dezmond A Harper(Jane Mi); 12 grandchildren; one great grandchild; three sisters, Patricia Worley, Antionette Milligan-Barnes (William) and Christel Batts; three Brothers, Richard Harper (Goldie), Louis Deberry (Linda) and Willie Kelly; . Edna Harper Dixon; special friends, Archie Corbitt, Hattie Vines and Carlos (Chuck) Corbitt; a host of other nieces, nephews and friends; and two devoted care givers, Raphael Svetaketu (USMC) and Cassie Huggins.
Funeral mass will be held at Noon Friday, July 21, 2017 at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 2438 S. Alston Avenue. Family visitation, 1 hour prior to service. A visitation and family visitation will also be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 20, 2017 at Pilgrim Baptist Church, 2420 S. Roxboro Street.
