Paul R. Garland Obituary
Proud Army Veteran, loving husband and Father, Paul R. Garland age 94, of Hamburg, New York entered the arms of Jesus at The New York State Veterans Home on January 13, 2024.
Paul was witty and enjoyed friends and family. He was known as a devoted man of God, who loved investing his time serving in his church.
Paul was born in Buffalo, New York in 1929 to Alvin and Lilian Garland, who were hard workers and of New England stock. Family memories surrounded vacation trips to Maine.
Paul attended West Seneca Senior Highschool, held his first job delivering the Buffalo Currier Express on his bicycle. (It had the best crossword puzzles). He was a hard worker from the get-go even as a young man. He also worked for Winegar’s Hardware store.
After graduation, Paul attended Chown Business School in Buffalo, and worked at the Ford Company downtown.
As the Korean war broke out, his goal was to join the army as his three brothers were involved in World War Two and set his patriotic heartbeat. But before he could join, he was drafted.
In the service Paul taught Heavy Weapons Training while being located on base in New Jersey and assumed he would continue to serve in that realm, but when he got to Korea, a shortage of Clerks moved him into that area of service.
As a Company Clerk a heroic memory we celebrate as a family, is the story of Paul delivering a message to the front lines. Sensing imminent danger from a mortar borage, he jumped out of his jeep, ran faster than the moving jeep and threw his body over a North Korean lady and her two children to protect them. Paul held that memory in his heart for years, before speaking of it only ten years ago.
Upon his return, Paul married the love of his life, Carol Mae Hodges, June 13th, 1953. Excited to start their new lives together, they resided in West Seneca, New York and were blessed with four children, Greg, Dianne, Ric and Mark.
Paul has 11 grandchildren and blessed with many great-grandchildren.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Linwood, Clarence, Kenneth and a sister, Agnes, as well as his oldest son, Greg and his grandson, Eric. He is survived by his wife of 70 years.
Paul was an influential man, a loving neighbor, a greatly treasured gentleman and will be deeply missed.
