An Irish immigrant, he received the award from US Army General William T. Sherman on July 18, 1877 in a ceremony at a military camp by the confluence of the Tongue and Yellowstone Rivers, Montana Territory, for his actions as a sergeant with Company E, 5th US Infantry, US Army, in the Indian Campaigns near Cedar Creek, Montana Territory, from October 21, 1876 until January 8, 1877.
